All immigrant visa applicants must complete a medical examination prior to their visa interview scheduled at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The examination must be completed by an authorized doctor (also known as “panel physician”) located in the country where the interview takes place. This medical examination is designed to screen for certain medical conditions that might make an applicant ineligible for immigrant visa (for example, tuberculosis, syphilis, etc.)
The process of medical examination is different for immigrant visa applicants located abroad and Adjustment of Status applicants physically present in the U.S. This blog post discusses the medical examination conducted abroad. For the medical examination process in the U.S., refer to our Form I-693 article.
The U.S. Department of State provides a list of the doctors authorized to complete immigration medical examinations in different countries. Applicants must contact one of the doctors and schedule an appointment. You must strictly follow the instructions on completing the medical examination for your country. All applicants must bring the following documents to their medical appointment:
- Visa interview appointment letter
- Passport
- Applicant’s all vaccination records (from birth until present)
The results of the medical examination will be either forwarded directly to the US Embassy/Consulate or given to the applicant in a sealed envelope which must be brought to the interview.
